Altnagelvin Hospital required a modular solution to tackle the surge in Covid-19 cases during the first winter of the pandemic in 2020.

Working alongside the WHSCT, we were able to provide a rapid expansion to the main building, allowing more space for staff and the increasing number of patients.

Offsite solution

P McVey Building Systems was appointed as the main contractor for the project, working alongside the WHSCT, to provide a a modular extension to the emergency department.

Our offsite construction ensured a quick turnaround project during a very busy period for the emergency department at Altnagelvin Hospital. The new extension was successfully handed over ahead of schedule and within budget.

Facility

The modular extension will be linked to the emergency department, delivering a new reception area, waiting room, two triage assessment rooms, seven treatment bays, a children’s area and two utility rooms. Providing additional areas for both staff and patients.

Project Overview

The project was comprised of 12 steel frame modules which were manufactured offsite ahead of schedule with internal electrics and plumbing required onsite with the installation.

The constrained location of the new extension made this a challenging project, with the team working in a live environment around incoming patients and staff onsite, as well as visitors. Our team successful avoided any disruption during a busy Christmas period and kept noise to a minimum during install.

Timescale

The bespoke 400m2 modular extension was designed in-house, manufactured and installed within 8 weeks from order. The team was onsite at the later hours of the day to try and keep disruption at a minimum with installation taking 2 working days.
